Sri Lanka Disability Protection Act – No. 28 of 1996

The Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, No. 28 of 1996 is a key piece of legislation in Sri Lanka that ensures the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities. This Act provides a legal framework to promote equal opportunities, prohibit discrimination, and protect the dignity of individuals with disabilities in all areas of life including education, employment, and public services.

It also led to the establishment of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, which oversees the implementation of disability-related policies and programs in the country.

United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD)

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) is an international human rights treaty adopted by the UN to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. It promotes full and equal participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of life, including education, employment, accessibility, health, and justice.

Sri Lanka became a signatory to the UNCRPD in 2007 and ratified it in 2016, committing to uphold its principles through national laws and policies. The Convention encourages countries to eliminate discrimination, ensure accessibility, and create inclusive environments for all.
